A devastating storm off the coast of Sicily has claimed multiple lives, including two recently discovered on a sunken superyacht. The luxury vessel, Bayesian, was caught in the violent weather on Monday, leaving six people missing, including British tech mogul Mike Lynch and several high-profile friends.
Rescue efforts have been ongoing since the incident, with 15 of the 22 people on board surviving. However, hopes of finding more survivors are dwindling. The latest discovery brings the confirmed death toll to three, including the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas.
Lynch, often referred to as “Britain’s Bill Gates,” had invited friends and acquaintances on the Mediterranean sailing trip to celebrate his recent acquittal in a high-profile fraud case. The group included Jonathan Bloomer, Morgan Stanley International Chairman, and Chris Morvillo, a lawyer who represented Lynch in the US.
In a shocking coincidence, Stephen Chamberlain, Lynch’s co-defendant in the fraud case, was fatally struck by a car while jogging in a village north of London on Saturday.
The Bayesian, owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, is a 2008 luxury sailboat built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi. It features the world’s tallest aluminum sailing mast and can accommodate up to 12 guests and 10 crew members.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with authorities working to identify the recently discovered bodies and determine the cause of the tragedy.
