Chicago Bears cornerback Douglas Coleman III was released from a Kansas City hospital on Friday and returned to Chicago after suffering an injury during a preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Coleman was injured while making a tackle during the game on Thursday night.
“He was walking around,” Bears head coach Matt Eberflus said in an interview with Chicago radio station WSCR “670 The Score.” “I did talk to him. He’s in good spirits.”
The incident occurred on the first play of the second half when Coleman tackled Chiefs wide receiver Cornell Powell near the sideline. As he made the tackle, Coleman’s neck bent awkwardly to the side, causing him to collapse on the field. The 26-year-old, who previously played in the Canadian Football League (CFL), lay motionless as medical personnel from both teams quickly attended to him.
Coleman was immobilized on a stretcher and taken off the field in an ambulance after trainers and doctors assessed his condition. Despite the frightening scene, Coleman was able to move his extremities as the medical staff carefully removed his facemask and secured him to a backboard before transporting him to the hospital.
Following his release from the hospital, Coleman returned to Chicago, where he is expected to continue his recovery. The Bears have not yet provided further details on his condition or potential timeline for his return to play.
