Ukraine’s air force reported a massive overnight attack by Russia, involving 67 long-range Shahed drones, with 58 successfully shot down. The attack prompted air defense units to be scrambled in 11 regions across Ukraine, with drone debris found near the parliament building in Kyiv. This rare incident of a Russian missile or drone penetrating central Kyiv’s defenses has raised concerns, as the city is protected by a network of Soviet-era and Western-donated air defense systems. The hilltop government quarter, housing key government offices, is considered one of the best-defended sites in Ukraine.
Pictures posted on Telegram showed debris scattered near the parliament building, with some pieces riddled with shrapnel. Reuters correspondents in Kyiv reported hearing a series of explosions around 3 a.m., waking up residents. Since Russia’s invasion began in February 2022, thousands of missiles and Shahed drones have been launched into Ukraine. The Iranian-designed Shahed drone, used by Russia since September 2022, is a cheap and expendable alternative to missiles, flying low and emitting minimal heat, making it challenging for conventional air defense systems to track.
The drones were launched from two border regions in Russia and the Russian-occupied peninsula of Crimea. This latest attack highlights the ongoing conflict’s intensity and the need for continued international support for Ukraine’s defense. The Ukrainian air force’s success in downing most of the drones demonstrates their capabilities, but the incident also underscores the importance of sustained vigilance and defense efforts. As the conflict continues, the international community remains concerned about the humanitarian impact and the need for a peaceful resolution.
