Napoli’s sporting director, Giovanni Manna, has shed light on the ongoing transfer saga involving Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay. The Scottish international, a product of United’s youth academy, is reportedly on the brink of a potential departure, with multiple clubs expressing interest. Napoli, in particular, has emerged as a strong contender for McTominay’s signature, but negotiations have proven challenging.
Manchester United recently rejected Napoli’s loan offer for McTominay, insisting on a transfer fee of at least £25 million ($32.4 million). Despite this hurdle, Napoli remains eager to secure the midfielder, though their ability to meet United’s demands is contingent on a significant financial boost.
Napoli’s interest in McTominay is intricately linked to the potential sale of their star striker, Victor Osimhen. The Nigerian forward has been heavily rumored to be on Chelsea’s radar, and the proceeds from his possible sale are expected to fund McTominay’s transfer to the Italian side.
Manna confirmed Napoli’s interest but remained tight-lipped about the details. “McTominay and [Billy] Gilmour are excellent players,” Manna commented. “But since they’re not our players, there’s nothing more to say. Our focus is on the upcoming game, and afterward, we’ll revisit the transfer discussions.”
The situation surrounding Osimhen’s future is pivotal, as his departure would likely facilitate McTominay’s arrival in Naples. Manna acknowledged the complexity of the situation, stating, “His desire [to leave] is clear. We are working with his representatives to find the best solution. He is under contract for another two seasons, so if we don’t reach an agreement by August 30, we’ll need to have further discussions with the player.”
With the transfer window closing soon, Napoli must act swiftly if they wish to bring McTominay into their ranks.
