China has urged all parties involved in the Middle East conflict to maintain peace and stability, following a series of deadly explosions in Lebanon that left at least 20 people dead and over 450 wounded. The blasts occurred in handheld radios used by the Iran-backed armed group Hezbollah.
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Lin Jian, expressed concern over the incidents, emphasizing opposition to any infringement on Lebanon’s sovereignty and security. “China is highly concerned about the relevant incidents and opposes any infringement on Lebanon’s sovereignty and security,” Lin said.
The explosions are believed to have been caused by Israeli spy agency Mossad, although Israel has not claimed responsibility. This incident has led to increased exchange of fire between Israel and Hezbollah across the Israeli-Lebanon border, parallel to the ongoing war in Gaza against Hamas.
Tens of thousands have fled the border area on both sides, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowing to return evacuated Israelis “securely to their homes”. The situation remains volatile, with fears of a return to all-out war, last fought 18 years ago.
China has been actively engaging in the Middle East, seeking to expand its influence beyond economic ties. At the United Nations, Chinese diplomats have accused Washington of blocking ceasefire efforts and emphasized the need for an end to Israel’s “unlawful presence” in Palestine.
China’s deputy permanent representative, Geng Shuang, questioned the UN Security Council’s inability to stop the human tragedy, stressing it’s a “legal obligation”. China’s call for peace and stability in the region takes on increased urgency as tensions escalate.
The international community is watching closely as the situation unfolds, with many calling for restraint and a peaceful resolution.
